studioplusthree on team shortlisted for Stage One of National Gallery Victoria Contemporary design competition

We’re thrilled to share that studioplusthree is on one of the teams shortlsited for Stage One of the National Gallery of Victoria Contemporary Design Competition, alongside our formidable colleagues and team members Smart Design Studio and Bates Smart.

NGV Contemporary will be one of the largest purpose-built art and design galleries in the southern hemisphere, pushing the boundaries of how we experience art and design. The NGV Contemporary Design competition called for a landmark building that delivers best-in-practice gallery design.

Our proposal related to concepts of time, gravity and light, inspired by the slow accretion of shell middens, which speak to the sedimentary and social build-up of place, layered and compressed over time. The building skin was wrapped, bent and folded to draw light into interior spaces, whilst offering unique views of the Melbourne Arts Precinct, city and gardens beyond.
